In 1973, Dr. Louis B. Massad proposed the idea of a YMCA to the Fredericksburg Rotary Club.
An office was opened at 1200 Prince Edward Street and programs began.  The doors opened to a new facility on Butler Rd. in 1982 and today covers over 90,000 sq. ft. complete with racquetball, gymnasium, indoor tennis, two indoors pools: exercise pool and a therapeutic pool, wellness/fitness center, family locker rooms, adult locker rooms: steams, saunas and whirlpool spas, plus a an outdoor water park.  The YMCA has a proud heritage of listening and responding to our area’s most critical social needs.
